Card B — What Happened Next

Tylenol is the #1 cause of acute liver failure in the United States.

56,000 emergency room visits a year. Around 500 deaths annually from acetaminophen toxicity. The FDA's black-box warning on liver damage is current — reaffirmed in 2023. Maximum 4g per day. Less if you drink. McNeil / J&J internal documents, surfaced in litigation, show the company was aware of consumer dosing confusion for years while Tylenol stayed on open shelves.

In 1998, the UK government didn't wait. Parliament restricted over-the-counter paracetamol pack sizes to reduce suicide-by-overdose incidents. A public-health decision, not a corporate one.
