BELLWETHER BREAD CO. â stuffed cornbread pockets, Appalachian Virginia, since 1971.
The brand didn't come from a franchise package.
It came from a filling station on the Virginia side of the Tennessee line.
Slide 1 â The Brand
A ram's-head badge. Deep slate blue. Smoked amber and brick red.
The logo was hand-cut in rubber the same year it opened â and never changed.
Slide 2 â The Origin
Lucille Dyer ran the Gulf station on Route 11 south of Abingdon.
When the interstate bypass rerouted traffic, she pulled the pump handles, moved the cast iron pans in, and opened the service window.
She sold cornbread pockets stuffed with whatever was in the kitchen.
By 1975, there were four locations across the Virginia-Tennessee border.
Slide 3 â The Menu
Every item is named for the terrain it comes from.
The Ridge Runner. The Cinder Flats. The Draw Pocket.
Prices haven't left the 1970s range at the originals.
The Sorghum Crumble side has been on the menu every single day since 1971 â no exceptions.
Slide 4 â The Storefront
Slate blue metal roof. Cream clapboard. A hand-lettered facade.
Every Bellwether faces the ridge â written into the original franchise agreement.
The interior runs narrow, like the filling station bays they mostly still are.
Cast iron pans hang on wooden pegs. Lantern lights. A chalkboard specials wall.
Slide 5 â The Lore
There's an item called Dyer's Draw.
It hasn't appeared on a printed menu since 1974.
Regulars say the filling changes week to week.
When asked about it in 1983, Lucille Dyer said: "The draw is what keeps you coming back."
No employee has ever confirmed a recipe. No employee has ever denied one.
File BB-OPS-0014 remains open.
